Client:
NASA
Target Consumer:
International Space Programs
Designers:
Petar Milkov, and Sameep Patel
Problem statement:
The rising population of space debris increases the potential danger to all space vehicles.
Design Statement:
Design a system that will mitigate space junk impact or reduce the volume of space junk.
Constraints:
- Use the design process
- Brainstorm/sketch at least 3 ideas
- The system can be deployed to any orbit
- Power source
- Must have failsafe system
- Cheap to operate
- One Weebly page per group
- One minute presentation
- Prototype example
Solution
The rockets propels the probe, which allows it to move around. Our device uses fuel as a power source. It is not loaded with too much fuel, as the solution's goal is to be cheap. The device is launched into the orbit of the Earth, and as the space junk orbits around, it is attracted to the triangular magnet; the magnet not being strong enough to interfere with the rocket itself. It then brings the space junk into the Earth's atmosphere in order to burn it. This device can collect both large sized and small sized space junk.
Conclusion
Explain a major deterrent for amassing space junk:
Amassing space junk will cause the earth to be surrounded by space junk and also make future space travel almost impossible to work.
